It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a major film company and bringing audiences to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving viewers curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys

The preview reveals Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (the actress), journeying with a fair and assisting giveaway items find good homes.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with him. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Previous Film

At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The final act Woody did before departing for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her outfit.

It is hoped she is still the key figure among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
