Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using such treatments should be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
