Three police officers were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the residence near Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the location and another man who ran away after the blast was found shortly later. The trio have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the location revealed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the siblings set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He believed the detonation had happened on a floor above the entrance and told the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to reporters, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
